Universal Design versus Accessible Design: What’s the difference?

In the past several years, two “buzz words” have started floating around the housing industry. “Universal design” and “accessible design” are often used interchangeably, but the two concepts have some key distinctions.

“Universal design” is defined by The Center for Universal Design as “the design of products and environments to be usable

by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.” The intent is that the product or environment be usable by all individuals alike – whether they are in a wheelchair, a child, or an adult. An example of a commonplace universal design element is the automatic door in your supermarket. This door is designed to be equally usable by a mother pushing her child in a stroller, a disabled person utilizing a wheelchair, a busy businessman who has both hands full with bagged groceries, or even the deliveryman.

“Accessible design” is a design process in which the needs of a disabled individual are specifically addressed. Accessible design may include products and design elements that are able to be used by individuals with a wide variety of disabilities. Often times when people think about accessible design, the Americans with Disabilities Act comes to mind. The ADA was created to ensure full access to public facilities and buildings for individuals with disabilities.

One of the most exciting technology advances in the past several years has been the overhead lift. For many individuals who suffer from a chronic illness or who have impaired mobility, the overhead lift has allowed them to remain in their homes. Overhead lifts provide significant benefits for both the caregiver and the client.

The Ergolet Ceiling Track

* They are safe and comfortable for the individual being lifted.

* They decrease the risk of injury to the caregiver by minimizing heavy lifting. Only one caregiver is required to complete transfers that may have previously required 2 caregivers.

* They can be configured to fit any room, regardless of layout and furnishings.

* They can be safely used in wet (bathroom) and dry (bedroom) situations.

* They can be configured to allow transport from room to room (i.e., lifting a patient from the bed and transporting him to the bathroom for toileting).

Ergolet has several track options. The E-track is a wall mounted track that provides convenient total room coverage. A ceiling track is an ideal solution for a point-to-point lifting need, such as from the toilet to the bathtub. Tracking can be straight or curved to increase efficiency and ease for the caregiver. Ergolet’s Mobile Gantry is an ideal solution when the need for the overhead tracking is temporary or immediate.

We are excited to announce the availability of the Sterling 2000 Outdoor Custom Stairlift. Our indoor models have been serving the Indianapolis market well for ten years and now we finally have an outdoor solution that is much more cost effective and practical.

What makes it ideal for outdoor use?

Rail sections are zinc plated and also powder coated in RAL7004 (Signal Gray) for extra protection.

The main PCB, switches and other electrical components are all weatherproofed as per our 1000 outdoor lift.

We have been testing a unit for the past 6 months in typically damp British winter weather which has also been a lot colder than usual at times including some significant snowfall. Number of times it stopped working? Zero.

The unit also spent many hours in a salt spray tank without adverse results meaning we can also recommend its use as close as 100 yards to the ocean.

In August 2011 Home Safe Homes installed a chair lift in our home. Because the washer, dryer, pantry, freezer, the cats food, water, and litter box are all downstairs, on any given day numerous trips to the basement can be made. My wife has fibromyalgia and the steps can be quite painful at times. With the new chair lift these trips downstairs have become more tolerable. The installation was done in a timely fashion and everyone involved was very professional in their manners and work. We are very happy and satisfied with our chair lift.
